It gets hot in the Sahara desert during the day (24 – 28°C), so bring your sunscreen and sunglasses!

However, it can be chilly at night in spring and fall (10 – 14°C), so it’s recommended to have at least one pair of long pants / jeans, a light jacket, a jumper or a long-sleeve and a shawl with you.

You’ll also need a shawl to protect you from the desert sand, because even in the village there is a lot of sand :). Btw, you can buy a local berber shawl in the village too. They come in all chakra colors.

Also, you are in Morocco, which is a Muslim country, so no alcolhol.

The Berber tribes live all across Morocco in the Atlas mountains and in the desert and were originally not Muslim, as their connection is more earth/sky bound. They literally let themselves be guided by the stars and the milky way.

However, most of them are Muslim now, so you’ll hear the occasional mosque nearby.

One of the Imams has a laundry service too, so if you want to get your laundry washed by the Imam from the mosque – a once in a lifetime opportunity – voilá. Only in the desert. 🙂

Traveling to the desert has gotten much easier over the years. Buses are modern and the stops along the way are at good restaurants with modern toilet facilities.

OPTION 1) MARRAKESH:

You can take a Supratours bus (25€ per tour) from Marrakesh and see the magestic Atlas mountains on the way. It brings you all the way to the Sahara desert in a day. You can also go by Supratours or CTM and make a stop-over in Ouarzazate, the famous backdrop for Laurence of Arabia and many other movies, visit the Kasbah and the movie studio, and take the bus the next day to continue to the desert. 

OPTION 2) FES:

You can take a CTM overnight bus (25€ per tour). I’ve done it and it worked well, same as the day buses.

OPTION 3) ERRACHIDIA / OUARZAZTE:

Fly into Errachidia (closest airport) or to Ouarzazte, and order a private taxi transfer that brings you to the desert. Takes between 2 and 4 hours. Prices are anything between 50 – 200€.
